Driving the Moose-Wilson Road – 6 Tips to Know Before You Go!

– Updated: April 22, 2024 –

The Moose Wilson Road (“Wyoming Highway 390” on the map) is a road that runs from Moose, WY to Wilson WY, (hence the strategic name), and is about 14.6 miles long from end to end.

Moose Wilson Road in Grand Teton National Park

On the Moose Wilson Road – heading south from Moose, WY to Teton Village / Wilson, WY

The part of the Moose-Wilson Road you are most likely interested in is the narrow, windy, 8-mile scenic section located between Teton Village and Moose, WY.

This is the scenic drive section of the road, and the section to drive in hopes to see wildlife.

Map of Moose Wilson Road in Grand Teton National Park

Map of 8-mile section of Moose Wilson Road between Teton Village and Moose, WY (in green)

It is also the road that can be used to go between the towns of Jackson/Wilson/Teton Village and Moose, WY. At the north end of the road, turn left for the Moose Entrance to Grand Teton National Park.

You will need to take the Moose Wilson Road if you are going to any of the following places:

  • Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve Center
  • Granite Canyon Trailhead
  • Phelps Lake Trailhead
  • Death Canyon Trailhead

Note: RVs and trailers (vehicles over 280 inches, 23.3 feet in length) are prohibited on the 8-mile scenic section between Granite Canyon Entrance and Moose, WY.

Whether you are using the road for function, for a scenic drive, or in hopes to see wildlife, here are a few things to know before you go.

Moose Wilson Road with Grand Teton in background

1. You Will Need a Park Pass

You will need a park pass if you are traveling from Teton Village to Moose and you will need to show it at the Granite Canyon Entrance. National Park Passes can be bought there too.

Moose Wilson Road Map in Grand Teton National Park

Map of 8-mile section of Moose Wilson Road between Teton Village and Moose, WY (in green)

You do not need a park pass if are traveling southbound from Moose, WY to Teton Village, WY.

Helpful Info: National Park Pass information and Prices

2. It’s the Scenic Route

The Moose-Wilson Road is mostly in the trees and you will see beautiful aspens along with the pine trees, tall grasses, and a variety of flowers. And hopefully some moose, bears, beavers, deer, elk and/or foxes.

Pro Tip: If traveling from Moose to Teton Village, at the beginning of the road, look for a view of the Grand Teton as seen in the following picture

Grand Teton National Park Moose Wilson Road with a view of Grand Teton from road

Look for a Grand Teton view on the Moose Wilson Road from Moose, WY heading south to Teton Village / Wilson, WY

And while this road is a scenic drive, there are very few places to pull over.

When there is a pullover, they are usually very small.

Don’t be surprised if some of the pullovers are blocked with signs saying “No Stopping” as officials are trying to keep traffic moving on this narrow, windy road.

If You Are Not in the Mood for the Scenic Route

You can take US-191 N/US-26 E/US-89 (See Map Below). It also runs between Moose, WY and the town of Jackson. It’s a larger, less windy, two-lane highway and has a higher speed limit.

Map of Moose Wilson Road (green) and HWY 191/89/26 (blue)

Map of Moose Wilson Road (green) and HWY 191/89/26 (blue)

NOTE: When heading south using the Moose Wilson Road, (marked in green) it will drop you off on the Teton Village side of the valley.

NOTE: Heading south using US-191 N/US-26 E/US-89, (marked in blue) will drop you off on the Jackson town side of the valley.

This is important to know, as to get to each side of the valley, you have to go all the way around using Teton Pass HWY 22. There are no roads that cut through!! It’s a pain, I know, but better to know this now and avoid wasting time looking for a cut through road (many have tried…including me…it just adds time instead of saving it…big sigh…)

3. You MIGHT See Animals

Please know you might see a moose.

It is not a guarantee, as much as we would like it to be, and as much as the name of the road seems to promise!

Moose have been spotted on all parts of this road, but it’s always good to stop and look at the Moose-Habitat Overlook on the north end of the road (easily recognizable look for a big parking area). This spot overlooks a large section of ponds.

Grand Teton National Park Moose Wilson Road Moose Habitat Overlook

Moose Habitat Overlook on the north end of the Moose Wilson Road

Moose are often seen in and by ponds.

In fact, wherever you see ponds in Grand Teton, look to see if a moose is there grazing on water lilies.

Growing up, my Gramma Frances never passed an animal-less pond without commenting “awww, what a shame…that would be a good place for a moose!” Now I do too! (And now maybe you?? You’re welcome.)

In the ponds along the Moose Wilson Road, you will most likely see beaver dams and may even catch a glimpse of a beaver swimming. While beavers are not as an impressive sight as a moose, they are still fascinating and entertaining to watch.

Grand Teton Baby Moose

Other Animals to Look For

Moose and beavers are not the only animals that you will possibly see on this road.

Other park animals are possible to see here too, including owls, foxes, coyotes, deer, elk, and bears.

We have seen bears! We once saw a black bear high up in a tall bush eating berries. It was amazing! I would have never thought to look up in a bush to see a bear.

Pro Tip: If you are specifically going on this road to see wildlife, you may increase your chances if you go around sunrise and/or sunset.

Grand Teton National Park Moose Wilson Road Bear

Bear crossing the Moose Wilson Road

Also, if you happen to get behind a local sightseeing van (usually a white van with a #22 Wyoming license plate) don’t be in a hurry to pass them.

They are there specifically on that road in hopes to show their paying customers animals.

Since that is their business, they probably have inside info on nearby animals or are familiar with the nearby animals’ patterns. Stay close to them in hopes to increase your chance of spotting an animal!

4. Take Your Time

The Moose Wilson Road is a narrow, two-lane road, that is 8 miles long with lots of turns and blind corners.

Many blind corners.

You will not cover these 8 miles in 8 minutes. It is a slower road.

Grand Teton National Park Moose Wilson Road One Lane Bridge

Take Your Time on the Moose-Wilson Road – there are many blind corners, two pedestrian crossings, and a one-lane bridge

Speaking of going slow, please do so as there are two pedestrian crossings on the road for people walking between the Laurance Rockefeller Preserve and Phelps Lake. Slow down and stop for them.

This scenic drive is a popular one. If you aren’t on the Moose Wilson Road for the scenery and wildlife, there will be many who are.

Please do not tailgate.

Grand Teton National Park Moose Wilson Road two Moose

Two young moose

5. There Is a Good Chance You Will Be Tailgated

The tailgaters will most likely have a Wyoming #22 license plate or an Idaho license plate. These are locals and seasonal employees.

They use this road ALL the time. They drive it uncomfortably fast and will tailgate you until they can pass you.

And they will pass you.

Even though they are not supposed to.

Let them pass.

Grand Teton National Park Moose Wilson Road Tailgate

Tailgating on the Moose Wilson Road doesn’t work or help anyone

Don’t speed up to accommodate them or try and stop them from passing.

Please don’t let it ruin your experience by getting upset and/or taking it personally.

It’s not personal, at all! They most likely are working and have to get back and forth many times a day on that road.

Let them pass.

Then go back to enjoying your drive and don’t give them another thought!

Pro Tip: If there is a long line of cars behind you, (and there isn’t an animal jam), look for the next small pullout to let them by.

6. Protect Yourself and the Animals

Your best bet for protecting yourself, your group, and the animals you hope to see is to follow the Animal Safety Rules.

  • Keep a safe distance of at least 100 yards from wolves and bears, and at least 25 yards from all other wildlife (honestly I think 25 yards is still too close) For close viewing and photos, use binoculars, spotting scopes, or long camera zoom lenses.
  • Don’t get in between an adult animal and it’s offspring. If you see a baby animal, assume the mom is very close by.
  • Don’t feed any animals. It’s illegal and it is the surest way to get them killed as they will start associating humans with food and then they often become aggressive. The animal usually then pays the final price of being euthanized.
  • Respect and follow instructions from the on-site Wild Life Management Teams. They are there to protect you and the animals. They are not trying to be “jerks” by asking you to stay in your car or move along. They really want you to see the animals, they know how thrilling that is! They just want to do everything possible to keep the animals safe and alive.

If you are lucky enough to see an animal on the Moose Wilson Road, protect yourself and the animals by keeping a safe distance!

Now that you know all the tips, go drive the Moose Wilson Road and enjoy!

Good Luck!!

I really hope you get to see a moose (pond or no pond…)!!

Keep Your Eye Peeled for a Moose!

The Cabins at Signal Mountain – A Grand Teton National Park Lodging Option

Signal Mountain Cabins are located at Signal Mountain Lodge and Marina, and is one of two lodging options located ON Jackson Lake, and INSIDE Grand Teton National Park (Colter Bay Village is the other).

Some would argue that Signal Mountain is the only lakefront property in the park because many (not all) of its cabins and rooms face Jackson Lake and the Tetons while only being a few feet away from the shore.

Grand Teton Mt. Moran at Signal Mountain Marina

Here we will give you detailed information on the Signal Mountain area with its services and amenities, the Signal Mountain Cabins, and the advantages and challenges of staying at the Signal Mountain Cabins.

Pro Tip: Make reservations as early as you can for the most selection and availability. These cabins fill up quickly, especially the Lakefront Retreat Cabins.

Staying at the Signal Mountain Lodge’s Cabins – Advantages and Challenges

There are advantages and challenges for all lodging choices in Grand Teton National Park, the following are Signal Mountain Lodge’s.

Please know: When I point out the advantages and/or challenges, I’m not doing so to persuade you to stay or dissuade you from staying at one of the cabins at Signal Mountain Lodge, but to tell you upfront what the cabins and rooms are and are not so you can:

  • go in with accurate expectations
  • be happy with your choice of lodging
  • avoid surprises

The information provided going forward is from me reading, reviewing, and scouring 1,200+ Signal Mountain visitor reviews.

Advantage: Central Location in Grand Teton National Park

This is probably one of the biggest advantages.

Signal Mountain Lodge is centrally located in Grand Teton National Park. This means shorter driving times to most places and activities in the park, compared to:

  • Lodging outside the park
  • Colter Bay, which is farther north
  • Headwaters Lodge at Flagg Ranch, as it is on the northern boundary of Grand Teton (technically in between Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks)
  • Jackson, WY – outside the southern border of GTNP

Drive Times from Signal Mountain Lodge

Drive times approximate without traffic:

  • to Jackson Lake Lodge = 5 miles, 14 minutes
  • to Moran Junction = 7.5 miles, 15 minutes
  • to Colter Bay Marina = 9.7 miles, 20 minutes
  • to Jenny Lake Visitor Center = 10.5 miles, 20 minutes
  • to Moose, WY = 17.3 miles, 27 minutes
  • to Jackson Hole Airport = 22 miles, 40 minutes
  • to Jackson = 30.3 miles, 45-60 minutes
  • to Yellowstone South Boundary = 26.3 miles, 40 minutes

Advantage: Located on Jackson Lake

Signal Mountain Lodge is located directly on Jackson Lake. It is on the eastern shore of the lake, which means many of it’s buildings, cabins, and rooms face the Tetons.

Some with fabulous views, like the Trapper Grill restaurant (more on that in a minute).

And while the other lakefront property, Colter Bay, has tall pine trees between it and the lake, many of Signal Mountain cabins are a few feet away from the shore with no tree obstruction of the mountains.

Grand Teton National Park - Signal Mountain Lodge by Marina

Signal Mountain Lodge is close to Jackson Lake with unobstructed views of the Tetons

Advantage: Free Wifi in ALL Cabins and Rooms

All cabins and rooms from the least expensive (One and Two Room Rustic Cabins) to the most expensive (Upper Lakefront Retreat and Homeaway from Home Cabin) have free wifi.

I list this as an advantage, even though none of us want to admit we like having wifi.

camera laptop phone

Wifi in every room

After all, having wifi and being on our devices doesn’t really fit into our vision of unplugging and reconnecting with our family and being one with nature in a national park.

But it is nice to have, if only to “share beautiful pictures of the scenery with friends on Facebook and Instagram….

You don’t have to share this advantage with your kids.

Advantage: Guests Only Lounge

This is a big bonus for those staying in the Signal Mountain cabins and rooms: the Guests Only Lounge.

Here you will find a cozy room that can fit about 20-25 people with a nice picture window of the Tetons. It also has a fireplace and is a good place to be on a socked in, rainy day.

Coffee cup

Guests Only Lounge has Coffee Early

Also, there are books, games, a TV, public computer and printer, and one of the most coveted items in all of GTNP: coffee before 6:00 am!

It is rumored to have coffee as early as 5:00 am. An early bird’s haven. But only for those staying at Signal Mountain.

Advantage: Cabins/Rooms that have Teton AND Lake Views

The Lakefront Retreats have Teton views with Jackson Lake in the foreground.

Granted, Jackson Lake Lodge has some rooms that have Teton and Jackson Lake views, but at Signal Mountain, you are within 100 feet of the lake!

Signal Mountain Bay at Grand Teton National Park

View from an Upper Lakefront Retreat Room at Signal Mountain – Photo Credit: Ticolover, TripAdvisor

Signal Mountain only lists the Lakefront Retreats as having a view of the Tetons and lake on their website. All other rooms are listed as “non-view”. Know that some other cabins (not all) may have a partial view of the Tetons, the lake, or both.

Pro Tip: When making reservations on the phone, ask if the room has “a partial view”.

Pro Tip: If a view from your room is the #1 priority for you, opt for the Upper Lakefront Retreat over the Lower Lakefront Retreat.

Advantage: Trapper Grill Restaurant

Fact: Trapper Grill has the best food inside Grand Teton National Park.

Well, it’s not a fact, but actually my humble (?) opinion that I like to pass off as fact. In fact, (dear lord let this word play stop….), I wrote an entire article on the Trapper Grill if you’d like more info.

If you are staying at Signal Mountain, you are a short walk away from the Trapper Grill found inside the main Signal Mountain Lodge (not the cabin check in lodge).

View out Trapper Grill Restaurant Window of Grand Teton

Trapper Grill has a diverse menu, something for most everyone – vegan, vegetarian, gluten free items included. I usually get one of their burgers or chicken sandwiches and come away very full.

Note: Portion sizes are large. Great if you have a way to keep leftovers.

Pro Tip: Eat outside on the deck. It has fantastic views and umbrellas for shade.

Advantage: The Rest of the Services, Amenities, and Recreation

On top of the other previously mentioned advantages, there is the rest of Signal Mountain’s services, amenities, and recreation.

All are easily accessible and within walking distance from the cabin area.

Guest services include: General Store, Gas Station, Coffee Bar, Restaurants, Bar, Laundromat, and Showers.

Amenities include: Full-Service Marina and Gift Shops.

Recreation options include: Boating, Fishing, Scenic Snake River Float Trips, Signal Mountain Summit Drive, Jackson Lake Dam, Picnicking, Swimming, and Hiking.

Following is a short description of each, with some insider tips when applicable.

General Store, Coffee Bar, Gas Station

The General Store and Coffee Bar are conveniently located by the gas pumps. So you can make it a one stop shop to get your gas, food, and coffee before you set out for a day of adventure and fun.

The Coffee Bar is inside the General Store and it has an outdoor seating area. It opens at 7:00 am.

Coffee to go

Coffee, Snacks, and Gas – One Stop Shopping at Signal Mountain’s General Store

The General Store has most of any food items you need, and also offers fresh made breakfast and lunch items. The following lists some items they offer:

  • Organic and all natural food choices
  • Environmentally friendly product alternatives
  • Snacks and drinks
  • Fishing supplies
  • Camping gear
  • Toiletries
  • Gasoline
  • Ice

Restaurants

Trapper Grill has already been mentioned, and it is worth saying again: good food, great deck, big portions. More info.

Explore GTNP Grand Teton National Park Signal Mtn Trapper Grill Deck

Signal Mountain Trapper Grill Outside Deck

Deadman’s Bar is also located in the main lodge. A full service bar where you can dine too. Funny enough, it doesn’t have any views of the Tetons or Jackson Lake.

Leek’s Pizzeria and Marina is where you want to go for all things Pizza and some things pasta.

Very Important Note: Leek’s Pizzeria is not located in the Signal Mountain Resort Area!!! Instead, it is located 11 miles to the north of Signal Mountain.

So do not order a pizza to go and expect to pick it up at the Trapper Grill.

It won’t be there.

It will be 11 miles to the north.

And that is okay, as Leek’s Pizzeria and Marina is worth the trip, as it is a restaurant on the lake, with a deck that overlooks it’s own marina (some views from the deck are obstructed by trees). It’s another great opportunity to eat outside, get a different view of the Tetons, enjoy pizza and maybe a microbrew or two. More info.

Laundromat and Showers

Staying at the cabins at Signal Mountain, you will have your own private bathroom (every room/cabin has one) and you will likely not need to use the public showers. But they are there, next to the laundromat.

The laundromat, that you might need.

  • Open 24/7
  • Coin operated, Washer = $3.00/load, Dryer = $1.00/20 minutes

Showers

  • Private shower rooms (not stalls)

Two Marinas

Signal Mountain has two marinas.

One at the resort that is a full service marina: Signal Mountain Marina.

And one located 11 miles north of Signal Mountain Resort that is a bouy rental and boat gas purchase marina: Leek’s Marina (where you can find Leek’s Pizzeria).

The one you want to be most concerned with is Signal Mountain Marina. The one conveniently located right here at the resort.

Leeks Marina – Owned by Signal Mountain, is 11 miles to the north of Signal.

Needles Gift Shop

Needles gift shop is located in the main lodge and it is one of the best gift shops in the park.

Needles has most of what the other park gift shops have, but what makes this gift shop great is that they offer products from local and regional artists.

Advantage: Recreation

As promised the following are recreation options available at Signal Mountain Resort.

Boating and Fishing

Boat rentals were already detailed previously when describing Signal’s full service marina.

In addition to boat rentals, Signal Mountain offers guided lake fishing trips and Scenic Snake River Float Trips.

Guided Lake Fishing

Have the local guides take you out to the best spots on Jackson Lake to catch a cutthroat, lake trout and/or brown trout.

Two and four hour guided trips are available.

Note:

  • Prior to your scheduled trip, you’ll need to purchase a Wyoming state fishing license, available at the front desk.
  • There is a 2 hour minimum for fishing trips.
  • Minimum age for fishing tours is 6 years old.
  • Save some time and click on the following link to view or download the Signal Mountain Lodge Participation Agreement before you arrive.

Pro Tip: If you are only using your Wyoming Fishing License for the day of the guided fishing trip (and for sure aren’t using it again for the rest of the year), make sure the trip is not canceled due to weather before getting your Wyoming Fishing License. Fishing trip reservations are refundable, licenses are not.

Scenic Float Trip on the Snake River

Take a scenic float trip on the Snake River on a 10 mile stretch inside Grand Teton National Park. Scenic is the correct word as you will have views of the Tetons, forests, wildflowers, and possible wildlife including bears, elk, deer, moose, bald eagles etc…

Grand Teton National Park Scenic Snake River Float

Scenic Snake River Float

The float trip is about 3.5 hours, with 2 of those hours on the water. Transportation to and from the river is provided in a van shared with other guests.

2025 Scenic Float Trip Rates:

  • Adult (13 yrs and up): $99
  • Children (aged 6-12): $85
  • Age minimum: 6 years old
  • Complimentary float trip for 4th grade students that have an Every Kid Outdoors Pass

Pro Tip: This is a very popular activity, sign up for a float BEFORE you arrive for your stay at Signal Mountain if possible.

Signal Mountain Summit Drive

A short distance to the south of Signal Mountain Resort, is the Signal Mountain Summit Road. Definitely worth doing, especially because you are so close.

The summit drive is 5 miles one way and takes about 20 minutes to drive each way.

There are two stops for views.

The first stop is “Jackson Overlook” and it is 2/3 of the way up. This is the more scenic view as it faces west and gives you a fabulous Teton view with the Jackson Hole Valley and Jackson Lake in the foreground. If you are able, take the dirt path that starts where the paved path ends. Take it to the edge, that way you get around the trees and a more unobstructed view.

Grand Teton National Park Signal Mountain Summit Road

View from Jackson Point on Signal Mountain Summit Road

Then jump back in your car and go to the top for the second view point. This one isn’t as scenic as it faces east, no Teton views, but it does give you an expansive view of the Jackson Hole Valley.

Pro Tip: The second stop is by a cell tower. If you haven’t been able to use your phone in the park, here is a good place to try.
Pro Tip: There is a vault bathroom here and a picnic table.
Pro Tip: Keep your eye peeled for elk, moose, and bears on this drive. I have seen many of these on this drive, especially bears.

Swimming

A nice place to swim is over by Signal Mountain’s Boat Launch area (see here on Google Maps). If you are facing the Tetons, the area to the left of the boat launch there is plenty of rocky beach to set up chairs, blankets, and towels. Just move far enough away from the ramp and keep your eye out for boats.

Grand Teton National Park Signal Mountain Swimming Area

Swimming Area at Signal Mountain Resort – a better time to swim would be in the afternoon….

If you are feeling more adventurous, you can take the 1.5 mile trail to south landing from the boat launch area. It’s a trail through the woods, along the shore. The end will plop you out at South Landing, where there are a few camping spots. Walk past the camping spots and find your own place to set your stuff before jumping in.

Note: As with all hiking in Grand Teton, carry bear spray, keep it easily accessible and know how to use it. I’ve seen many bears around Signal Mountain.

Picnicking

If you don’t want to get in a car, but instead walk to a picnic spot, you will find some picnic tables along the marina. You’ll most likely be in full sun so be sure to bring hats and sun glasses.

There are also a few picnic tables at a designated picnic area by the campground. Fantastic photo opportunities here.

If you don’t mind getting in the car, you can take a very short drive to the Catholic Bay Picnic Area by the Sacred Heart Church – a little to the north of Signal Mountain. Take the turn to the church, and then take the immediate right to the picnic area. Here you will find a couple more picnic tables and grills to cook on. Follow all fire safety rules.

Note: To keep you and the wildlife (specifically bears) safe, follow all food handling and storage rules.

Pro Tip: Again, have bear spray close and know how to use it.

Hiking

There isn’t a lot of hiking that starts directly from Signal Mountain. There are two trails.

One is to South Landing that was mentioned in the swimming section. You can take the 1.5 mile trail (3 miles round trip) from the Signal Mountain boat launch area or you can drive and park to the South Landing parking area and walk 1/2 a mile (1 mile round trip).

Grand Teton National Park South Landing Trail

South Landing Trail at Signal Mountain

The other trail is hiking up Signal Mountain, to Jackson Point Overlook. To the same place you can drive to on the Signal Mountain Summit Road.

The hiking trail is 6.8 miles round trip, with a 920 feet elevation gain. That makes it a moderate hike on a scale of easy to strenuous.

To be honest with you, I have never hiked this trail because you can drive to the same spot. I save my hiking time for places cars can’t go.

Which is what I suggest you do too.

Especially if you are short on time.

Save your hiking for other hikes, such as String Lake and Taggart Lake.

Jackson Lake Dam

Jackson Lake Dam is close by and requires getting into a car to get there. Here you can picnic, explore, fish (if you have a license), take photos, or just relax.

Challenges of Signal Mountain Cabins and Rooms

Ok. That is a lot of advantages.

So much so, I feel I need to state here that I am not an affiliate of Signal Mountain, nor do I get any kickbacks if people stay here.

Each advantage is one I feel really stands out as a plus.

But there are challenges.

They are listed below, and if there is a solution to a challenge, it will be listed with the challenge.

Challenge: “Seems Expensive for What You Get.”

To be fair, this is a challenge mentioned frequently for most lodging inside Grand Teton National Park.

To accurately set expectations, most of Signal Mountain’s cabins and rooms equate to three star rooms for five star prices.

I know! That is tough to hear….

…and it probably doesn’t make you feel better to know that is the way it is for lodging inside (and some outside) the park.

What Signal Mountain offers that other lodging in the park doesn’t offer is it’s central location INSIDE the park, it’s close proximity to the lake, and it’s close up views of the lake and the Tetons.

As you can see, I’m restating the “advantages” here.

Look over the advantages and read on the rest of the challenges to decide what you value in an accommodation on your vacation and if Signal Mountain is a fit. (Also, be sure to check out “Saving Money Tips” below.)

Challenge: “Rooms Are More Like Motel Rooms.”

This is surprising to some people as they expect to find log cabins within a national park.

At Signal Mountain, there are both cabins and motel-like rooms, depending on which cabin/room option you reserve.

For a more rustic experience, opt for the One or Two Room Rustic Log Cabin. They are cabins, as it says in the name, but note that they are connected to other cabins, often in tri-plex and quad-plex buildings. They are not stand alone cabins. Note that rustic also means: no microwave or coffeemaker.

The Lakefront Retreats, Country Rooms, and Premier Western Rooms are all motel-like rooms on the inside. And like motel rooms they come with coffeemakers and microwaves.

Challenge: No Air Conditioning.

There is one type of room that does have air conditioning – The Premier Western Rooms. They are the newest built rooms at Signal Mountain.

So if that is #1 on your list for comfort, the Premier Western Room is for you!

Otherwise, there are box fans available for the rooms.

Honestly, as it does get hot in the afternoon, it does cool down in the evening and morning. So while air conditioning is great in the afternoons, a box fan should do the trick. Also the box fan doubles as a provider of white noise.

And speaking of noise….

Challenge: “Walls are thin.”

With many rooms being in tri-plex and quad-plex buildings, you are most likely going to have neighbors. Some of the structures are also old, so there is a high probability you will hear your neighbors.

Solutions include – the box fan (dual use of cooling room and white noise), ear plugs, ear buds, headphones and making an effort to be quiet for your neighbors. If everyone is aware of this issue, then everyone can make an effort to reduce their own noise level.

Note: In studying all the reviews, it was the people who stayed in the Lower Lakefront Retreats that most often noted the noise. Which isn’t surprising as the Upper Lakefront Retreats are directly above them. Something to keep in mind if noise is going to be an issue.

Tips When Making a Reservation

To make a reservation, call: 307-543-2831 or book online. Add special requests by telling the reservation agent on the phone, or add them to the “notes” box on the online form.

  • Book early to get the best possible options and the most to select from, they sell out by opening of summer season. You can make a reservation 13-16 months in advance.
  • Book early especially if you want a Lakefront Retreat Room – the rooms with Teton and Lake views.
  • For peace of mind, confirm your reservations every couple of months if you have booked 16 months out (maybe that’s just me…).
  • Book direct from Signal Mountain Lodge for the best rates and availability (3rd party vendors often charge more and have more restrictive cancellation policies).
  • All rates are based on double occupancy. There is a $10 per person/per night for any additional people at and over the age of 18. No extra charge for additional people 17 years old and under.
  • Know that all rates posted on the web site do not include tax. (Tax is usually around 11% = 6% state tax, 5% lodging tax.)
  • If you are requesting a pack and play – call a couple of days before to make sure it is ready and still available. Bring wipes and cleaner just in case.
  • If you have mobility issues, it is best to make your reservation online to discuss options 307-543-2831.
  • Also concerning mobility issues – may want to ask about the height of the beds – some have commented they are really high and can be difficult to get into.
  • If you think you may want to stay a few more nights, book ahead of time. It’s harder to add on while staying there as they are usually full.
  • If you are bringing your dog, note that dogs are welcome in all rooms EXCEPT in the Upper Lakefront Retreats and the Premier Western Rooms.
  • There is a $20 per night pet charge. See Signal Mountain Pet Policies.
  • For the best view of the Tetons and Lake, book an Upper Lakefront Retreat.
  • If you want air conditioning – book a Premier Western Room.
  • If you want kitchen facilities to cook your own food – book a Lakefront Retreat, the Two Room Bungalow, or the Home Away from Home cabin.
  • When making your reservation, ask if there is a full view or partial view, even if it states there is or isn’t.
  • When you call to reserve a room with a sofa bed, ask if it has a blow up mattress. If it doesn’t, plan on bringing your own if you can.
  • Check your room to make sure it is what you requested.
  • Know check in time is 4:00 pm and check out is 11:00 am.
  • Know all buildings are non-smoking.

Reservations and Cancellation Policies

The following reservations and cancellation policies information is taken directly from the Signal Mountain Lodge web site. So where you see “we” mentioned, it is Signal Mountain Lodge.

  • Lodging reservations can be made online at Signal Mountain Lodge or by calling the Reservations Team at 307-543-2831.
  • To guarantee your reservation we require the first night’s deposit, including tax.
  • We will send written confirmation after we obtain your deposit.
  • All cancellations regardless of reason (inclement weather, flight changes, travel plan changes, etc…) will be charged a $25 per room administrative fee and are accepted up to 7 days prior to arrival by 11:59 p.m. MDT.
  • Cancellation within 7 days of arrival constitutes full forfeiture of deposit.
  • ANY date changes (including arrival date and departure date) are accepted up to 7 days prior to arrival.
  • Date changes within 7 days of arrival constitutes full forfeiture of deposit.
  • Groups traveling together with a combined total of more than 3 rooms are subject to a 28-day cancellation/change policy, may not book more than 10 rooms combined and must be approved by Management.
  • We do not have restaurant or gathering space for groups.
  • (Note: May and October reservations will be subject to a 3-day cancellation/change policy for reservations of 3 or fewer rooms; admin. fee still applies.)

Tips to Enhance Your Stay

Here are some additional tips while staying in the Signal Mountain Cabins and Rooms:

  • Have a good map and directions to get to Signal Mountain Lodge and Marina. Cell service is spotty throughout the park and you may not always be able to pull up directions on your phone.
  • If possible, bring your own small fan, to aid in cooling off the room and for white noise.
  • Bring a white noise machine.
  • Just in case, bring any cleaning supplies you think you may need.
  • Bring extra camp chairs for sitting out on the deck if there is more than two people in your party.
  • Bring Bear Spray, have it reachable and know how to use it.
  • Bring bug spray. You are closer to the water, which can mean more mosquitos.
  • Bring an afterbite stick.
  • Bring slippers. Bathroom floors are tile and can be cold in the morning.
  • Keep the cabin free of food, crumbs, and food wrappers, or keep it tightly packed up to keep away unwanted critters.
  • Keep the cabin door closed at all times.

Saving Money Tips

  • If you like the view, but don’t want to pay the money to stay here, stop by and eat a meal here instead at Trapper Grill.
  • If you like the view, but don’t want to pay the price of a Lakefront Retreat Cabin, you can stay in other units, and then enjoy the view from the Guests Only Lounge.
  • If you like the view, but don’t want to pay the price of a Lakefront Retreat Cabin, stay in one of the other units and take your chairs to the beach.
  • Note that a smaller room doesn’t always necessarily mean cheaper. For example, a one room Country Room with a king bed or two queen beds is $370.26+ tax a night, while a 2 bedroom rustic cabin with two double beds is $334.25 + tax a night.

Things to Consider

The following are some tips that didn’t fit into a previous section on this page, that are worth considering.

  • If you are trying to decide between a cabin at Jenny Lake Lodge and Signal Mountain Lodge, consider going with an Upper Lakefront Retreat room at Signal. It is less expensive, and has a view from the room. The Jenny Lake Lodge cabins do not have views from their cabins.
  • If you are trying to decide between a Lower and Upper Lakefront Retreat room, if you can afford it, go with the Upper Lakefront Retreat for a better view, a more private deck, and not having to hear your neighbors walk around above you. Most Lower Lakefront Retreat reviewers said they would pay the extra money and opt for the Upper on their next stay for these reasons.
  • Know that some of the Lower Lakefront Retreat’s outside porches are a shared walkway with other guests.
  • Many reviewers suggest an evening sunset on your deck with carry out food and drinks if you stay in the Upper Lakefront Retreat.
  • Stargazing is possible from all cabins and rooms..
  • Dogs are not allowed on the patio at the restaurant.
  • All cabins and rooms are a short walk away from the lake and views.

For this article, we will only be covering the Colter Bay Campground.

So to be clear on terminology, as “Campground” and “RV Park” are often used interchangeably:

  • Colter Bay Campground is for tent and dry RV camping. No hookups.
  • Colter Bay RV Park is for RV camping with water, sewage, and electricity hookups. No tents allowed.

Colter Bay Campground is the place for you DIY’ers, that have your own tents and campers. (RVs can camp here too, with no access to hookups).

Each campsite has:

  • Picnic table

  • Bear-proof food storage locker
  • Access to nearby water spigots
  • Access to nearby flush toilets

There are 22 restrooms throughout the campground with running water and flushing toilets.

22 restrooms for 335 campsites may not sound like a lot, but it works, as you are usually not too far from one (and luckily, not too close to one).

Note: These restrooms do not have showers. Showers are found in Colter Bay Village for a fee.

Pro Tip: In Colter Bay Campground, your campsite will most likely have many, tall trees. If you have a hammock, bring it!!

Advantages and Challenges of Staying at Colter Bay Campground

The following list of advantages and challenges can help you decide if the Colter Bay Campground is for you.

ADVANTAGES

Advantage: The campsites are big, spacious, and in the forest

Colter Bay Campground has some of the bigger campsites inside Grand Teton National Park.

They are spacious, sometimes with room for more than one tent and are in the forest. The trees provide shade for most of the day, making the afternoons a little cooler. If you have a hammock, bring it! You’ll have no problem finding convenient places to hang them.

Advantage: Colter Bay Village

Colter Bay Village Services

Following is a short description of each Colter Bay service/facility, along with some insider tips when applicable.

Grocery Store

For a grocery store in a national park, Colter Bay’s General Store does a good job providing a large selection of fresh and packaged food including organic fruits and vegetables!

They are a full-service grocery store and even have a small deli with freshly prepared sandwiches to grab and go. You can also find fresh made donuts and coffee.

In the back of the store, there is a small liquor store that sells beer and wine including locally brewed beer.

Also you will find one of my favorite things located in Colter Bay’s General Store -  their ice cream station.

The ice cream station is located in the back of the store between the deli and liquor section and has a selection of about 6-10 flavors. The ice cream station is a popular item in the evening, requiring two to three employees to man it.

Be sure to get your ice cream before store closing hours!

Grand Teton National Park Colter Bay General Store

Colter Bay General Store

Pro Tip: If the ice cream station doesn’t have a flavor you want, go to the freezer section and you will find a few flavors of ice cream in multiple sized cartons to pick from; as a bonus it’s usually cheaper too!

Pro Tip: The Colter Bay General Store is also a place to get all your s’mores supplies!

Pro Tip: A great place for s’mores is the north end of Swimming Beach. You will have an unobstructed view of Jackson Lake and the Tetons! (They no longer have campfire rings there, so you will need to bring your own camper stove.)

Coffee Bar

Never fear, they have your Starbucks coffee here at Colter Bay’s Coffee Bar, located inside the General Store.

For 2025 - hours open are listed as 7:00 am (I know! It needs to be way earlier!!) to 3:00 pm.

Pro Tip: While anxiously awaiting your order to be made, take a look around at all the knick-knacks and souvenirs. Get your coffee and souvenirs at one time…two birds, one stone…

Restaurants

There are two restaurants in Colter Bay Village: the Ranch House and the Cafe Court Pizzeria.

Ranch House

The Ranch House describes itself as “American Comfort Food with a BBQ Twist”.

It is a sit-down, dine-in, restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There is a bar area you can sit at and order food too.

Possibly one major plus for the Ranch House is that it opens at 6:30 am. The earliest in Colter Bay that you can get coffee.

Note: The Ranch House does not have views of Jackson Lake or the Tetons.

Note: The Ranch House closes in between meals. Be sure to check the Ranch House hours of operation.

Cafe Court Pizzeria

Here you can get pizza, salads, and sub sandwiches starting at 11:00 am.

You can dine in at the Cafe Court Pizzeria if you choose, just know, like the Ranch House, the Cafe Court doesn’t have views of Jackson Lake or the Tetons.

If the view is important to you, (like it is to me) place a to-go order online, pick it up, and head to the marina, Swimming Beach, or the picnic area at Swimming Beach. All have fantastic views!

My Experience: My family has had pizza here many times and loved the pizza. They are very large and two large pizzas feed our family of seven very easily with a few slices left over.**

Launderette and Showers

These are located in the same building next to the General Store.

The launderette is open 24/7, but you will need to check the hours for the showers, as they usually close around 7:00 pm (which to me seems early).

Showers are separated into men's and women’s showers and cost $5.00 a shower with towel rental and soap extra.

My Experience: I like the showers here, as there isn't a time limit, and every time I have used them there has been plenty of hot water.

Pro Tip: Wear shower shoes!!!

Pro Tip: There is free wifi service here.

Ranger Station

You don’t know how useful a ranger station is until you need one! So take note, the Ranger Station is located at the Colter Bay Visitor’s Center.

Here you can get your boat permits that are needed if you have brought your own boat to access the lakes and rivers in Grand Teton.

The Ranger station is where you need to pick up your backcountry camping permits.

And the Ranger Station is where you will find actual park rangers. They are the people to ask when in need of ideas of things to do, where to go, and what to see. They also have the latest and most up-to-date information on what is going on in the park. They are the experts and they know their stuff!

The rangers even have activities you can do with them!

The Rangers at Colter Bay lead a variety of programs throughout the day including a hike to Swan Lake, a lakeshore stroll, Indian arts and culture, wildlife watches, short presentations on park highlights, and a variety of evening programs.

Service Station and Convenience Store

While not really within walking distance, the Service Station and Convenience Store are conveniently located at the entrance of Colter Bay Village. Stop here to gas the car for the day’s adventures and go inside and grab souvenirs, snacks, and coffee too.

Full-Service Marina

The Colter Bay Marina is just a short walk away.

Here you can:

  • Sign up for a guided fishing trip for Jackson Lake or the Snake River.
  • Take a scenic lake cruise (with and without meals) (Note: Check water levels - Colter Bay Marina was closed in 2022 due to low water levels and no scenic cruises ran).
  • Rent kayaks, canoes, and motorboats. (Note: Check water levels - Colter Bay Marina was closed in 2022 due to low water levels and boat rentals were not available.)
  • Walk the Lakeshore Hiking Trail (1-2 miles round trip).
  • Walk out to “The Point” (a quick side trip found along the Lakeshore Hiking Trail) for fantastic views and to watch the boats come in and go out.

Pro Tip: If you have some time, set up a hammock on your way to or close to the point and watch the boats drive in and out.

Colter Bay Visitor’s Center and Museum

Located by the marina, the visitor’s center is there for you…the visitor.

Go to the Colter Bay Visitor’s Center to:

  • See the 35 artifacts from the David T. Vernon Indian Arts Collection.
  • See a variety of short movies on Grand Teton National Park including the fabulous documentary on the reintroduction of Wolves in Yellowstone.
  • Attend a ranger-led program.
  • Talk with park rangers.
  • Shop the bookstore and gift shop.
  • Chat with visiting Native American artists and view their work.

Amphitheater

The Amphitheater is located right next to the Colter Bay Visitor’s Center. Here, come by in the evenings where rangers lead programs on all things Grand Teton National Park. Programs include presentations on animals found in the park, wildflowers, geology, history, and much more.

There are usually two presentations a night.

The later presentation usually has a campfire going, so come down to the front to get warm.

You can also attend a non-denominational church service at the Amphitheater on Sunday mornings.

Gift Shops

No destination is complete without gift shops to pick up souvenirs for loved ones and more importantly, for yourself!

Colter Bay has three shops you can visit for souvenirs and clothing.

The main gift shop is connected to the General Store, by the Coffee Bar. This is the largest shop where you can find all the usual suspects: t-shirts, hats, sweatshirts, jewelry, art, candles, key chains etc… and they have camping and hiking gear for sale there too.

The Visitor’s Center has a bookstore that sells gift and souvenir items too.

The third shop is found in the marina store. Here you can also get t-shirts and hats.

Something for everyone in Colter Bay's gift shops

Pro Tip: In the main gift shop, look for the “Sale” table, there are usually some good items to be had and as the season goes on, there are more and more to pick from.

Recreation at Colter Bay Village

Okay, this is where Colter Bay really does shine, it’s long list of recreational activities and opportunities, including:

  • Hiking
  • Fishing
  • Swimming
  • Boating
  • Scenic Cruises
  • Horseback Riding
  • Picnicking

Hiking

Colter Bay serves as the trailhead for three hikes. All are relatively flat and range in distances from 1-mile round trip (RT) to 10 miles RT.

Grand Teton National Park - Colter Bay - Lakeshore Trail

View from the outside loop of the Lakeshore Trail at Colter Bay

Pro Tip: Lakeshore Trail is a great intro hike to Colter Bay and Jackson Lake, and has fantastic views of the Tetons on the outside loop.

Pro Tip: If you do Lakeshore Trail, for the best views - start and walk along the marina. When you get to the outer loop, go counterclockwise, then finish the inner loop clockwise ending by the amphitheater/visitor's center or back at the marina.

Fishing

You can book a private, guided fishing trip through Colter Bay for both lake fishing on Jackson Lake or fly fishing on the Snake River. These trips are open to the beginner up to the avid angler.

Grand Teton National Park Fishing

Guided Fishing Info

Pro Tip: You will need to purchase a Wyoming State Fishing License no matter what type of fishing you do. You can purchase one at the Colter Bay Marina store.

Swimming

Colter Bay has a designated swimming area, appropriately called "Swimming Beach". It is a large beach and has fantastic views of the Tetons.

Two things to know before going - the beach is a rock beach, not sand, and in the afternoons you will be in full sun.

Grand Teton National Park Colter Bay Swimming Beach

Colter Bay Swimming Beach

Now, as uncomfortable as a rocky beach sounds, the advantage is that you don't have the problem of sand going everywhere. Also, you can prepare by wearing water shoes and bringing chairs if blankets laid out on the rocks don't appeal to you.

Be sure to bring and reapply sunscreen and/or bring an umbrella or a portable sun shade.

Note: I cannot stress enough how much you will need sunscreen. It is really easy to burn here with the high elevation and the thinner atmosphere.

Boating and Scenic Cruises

Want to escape the crowds?

We've got you.

The perfect way to leave the crowds behind and get a different perspective of Jackson Lake and the Tetons is by renting a boat or taking a scenic cruise.

Renting a Canoe or Kayak

The nice thing about renting a canoe or kayak at Colter Bay is that they are already in the water. You don’t have to load them up and transport them anywhere! You just put on your life jacket, grab your paddle and go. The marina staff will give you a map and instructions.

Take a Scenic Cruise

If you’d rather relax, get closer to the Tetons, and leave the navigating to someone else, a scenic cruise is a good option.

Colter Bay offers cruises throughout the day with and without meal options.

All cruises take you over to the west side of the lake closer to the Tetons.

Along the way, a narrator gives you information on John Colter, who Colter Bay was named after, and other history of the area. As you get closer to the Tetons, they give you more information on the geology of the area.

If there is extra time (there usually is), the narrator will ask the audience what subject they want to know more about.

Picnics

As Colter Bay is right on Jackson Lake with views of the Tetons, it makes a great place for picnics.

You will find a couple of picnic tables scattered here and there at the marina and along Swimming Beach, with more tables located at the north end of Swimming Beach.

And if you don't need a picnic table, throw a blanket down on Swimming Beach or anywhere you see fit.

CHALLENGES

Challenge: No Lake or Teton Views from Sites

Colter Bay Campground sites are not directly on Jackson Lake and do not have views of the mountains or lake (due to the tall, pine trees), but both are a short walk away.

Colter Bay Picnic Area overlooking Jackson Lake with Mt. Moran in background

Colter Bay Swimming Beach overlooking Jackson Lake – a short walk from the campground, specifically for loops D and E.

Challenge: You May Have to Drive to Access Most of Colter Bay Village

Depending on what loop you are in and what campsite, it may be a long walk to some places in Colter Bay Village. Therefore, you’ll probably find it faster and sometimes easier to drive.

Colter Bay Campground Map

Colter Bay Campground Map – Campground (in orange) labeled in village

Pro Tip: Reserve a campsite in loops D or E for an easy walk to Swimming Beach, the picnic area on Swimming Beach, and the amphitheater.

Note: Campground loops F and G are up on a hill

Challenge: Weak Satellite Signals

There is no Wifi in the campground, but you can find free Wifi at the Laundry and Showers building, Restaurants, and the Colter Bay Cabin Office.

Satellite and TV signals are spotty here at best. For evening attend a ranger-led talk, or go to the picnic area on Swimming Beach and watch a sunset.

Pro Tip: The Willow Flats Overlook by Jackson Lake Lodge has pretty consistent cell signals.

Extra Tips

  • Campsites on the outside edges of the loops usually have more trees, which provides a little more shade and privacy
  • There are shower and laundry facilities located next to the General Store in Colter Bay Village. You’ll most likely need to drive to them from your campsite.
  • The loop roads are narrow, drive slowly and carefully
  • Bring your leveling equipment, you are going to need it
  • Always have your permit posted on your campsite post – that way others know the spot is taken. Putting a tablecloth on the table or hanging a clothesline helps too.
  • If you didn’t make reservations, and are hoping to stay at Colter Bay Campground, go up to the campground entrance and check if there have been some cancellations. This will be the second year of reservations, so it is unknown the frequency of cancellations, but you can try. I wouldn’t bank on this plan, but you can try.
  • All campfire materials can be bought at the Colter Bay General Store, including marshmallows…

Colter Bay Campground Rules and Policies

  • Check-in is 12 PM.
  • Check-out is 11 AM.
  • Maximum guests allowed per site (not including group sites) is six.
  • Tent sites allow for up to one tent and two vehicles. Multiple or over-sized tents only permitted in sites designated for multiple tents.
  • RV sites allow for one RV (tow included) only. (For reference, 2 motorcycles = 1 vehicle)
  • The maximum stay permitted at Colter Bay Campground is 14 nights, and the maximum cumulative stay between all park campgrounds is 30 nights.
  • Quiet hours are 10 pm – 6 am. Generators cannot be used during these hours.
  • Camping accommodations are pet-friendly. Please review Campground & National Park Pet Regulations.
  • Wildlife activity is prevalent in the park. Please be familiar with food storage and wildlife safety guidelines.
  • U.S. citizens or permanent residents with permanent disabilities can apply for an Access Pass / Senior Pass through the National Park Service.
  • Water Hookup Fee: The Utility fee is imposed on all lodging and camping products to defer the higher cost of providing water and sewer in the remote locations in which we operate. The amount of this fee is determined by taking the difference in the cost of providing these services less the comparable cost of similar services in local areas. This fee is reviewed annually and approved by the National Park Service.

Colter Bay RV Park vs. Colter Bay Campground

For this article, we will only be covering Colter Bay RV Park – full hookups of water, sewage, and electricity.

So to be clear on terminology, as “RV Park” and “Campground” are often used interchangeably:

  • Colter Bay RV Park is for RV camping with water, sewage, and electricity hookups. No tents allowed.
  • Colter Bay Campground is for tent and dry RV camping. No hookups.

Colter Bay Village RV Park

After reading the description of Colter Bay and all the services it provides, you may have deduced that it is a pretty big place (well, big for Grand Teton National Park anyway). The following is a map of Colter Bay Village, showing the location of the Colter Bay RV Park in the village.

Colter Bay RV Park Advantages and Challenges

The following list of advantages and challenges can help you decide if the Colter Bay RV Park is right for you.

Please know: When I point out the advantages and/or challenges, I’m not doing so to persuade you to stay or dissuade you from staying at Colter Bay RV Park, but to tell you up front what the RV sites are and are not so you can:

  • Go in with accurate expectations
  • Be happy with your choice of lodging
  • Avoid surprises

Advantage: RV Sites are Large Enough For Slide-outs, Awnings

Most sites have room for pullouts, slide-outs, and awnings.

Advantage: RV Sites are Shaded

All sites have a lot of shade, with most of them being about 80% shaded.

Pro Tip: Bring your hammocks.

Multiple Hammocks hung stacked on top of one another

Advantage: You’ll Have Your Own Picnic Table

Each site has its own picnic table. With the General Store nearby for supplies, you are set for a picnic.

Remember you are in bear country and to handle food, food storage and clean up properly. Colter Bay RV Park is very bear-safety conscious and on-site managers are known to confiscate any items that are not stored properly.

The following items must be stored properly, and NOT left outside anytime day or night, unless in immediate use:

  • Food
  • Trash
  • Drink Cans & Bottles
  • Dishes & Utensils
  • Wash Basins & Cleaning Supplies
  • Coolers
  • Toiletries
  • Water Bottles
  • Stoves & Grills
  • Pet Food & Bowls

Confiscated items can be retrieved at the Colter Bay RV Park Check-in Desk.

Please know the on-site managers do not confiscate improperly stored items to be “jerks”. They do it for your safety and the bears’ safety. Bears are often seen in Colter Bay. Bears that get too comfortable around humans are often euthanized.

They are helping you to not be the culprit responsible for endangering humans and bears.

Each site comes with its own picnic table

Advantage: The RV Park is Close to Everything in Colter Bay Village

In addition to the conveniences of full hookups, the RV sites are within walking distance to all the facilities of Colter Bay Village, including the general store, gift shop, laundry and shower area, restaurants, marina, museum, amphitheater, swimming beach, and picnic area.

Note: If you are staying at Colter Bay RV Park at the beginning of the season (May) or end of season (late September – October) not all amenities and services may be open and/or available. To find out, call: 307-543-2811.

Pro Tip: Book Sites 401 – 430 for the shortest walk to the Colter Bay General Store, Gift Shop, Activities Desk, and the Laundromat and Showers building.

Pro Tip: Book Sites 505 – 512 for the shortest walk to the Picnic Area

Two Restaurants Located in Colter Bay Village

Stop by the visitor’s center for a schedule.

CHALLENGES

Challenge: No Lake or Teton Views from RV Sites

Colter Bay RV Park sites are not directly on Jackson Lake and do not have views of the mountains or lake (due to the tall pine trees), but both are a short walk away. It is just a few minutes’ walk to the Colter Bay Marina and/or to the Swimming Beach.

Challenge: Unlevel Sites

The campsites are a mixture of gravel and dirt, which makes many of the sites unlevel. You will most likely need leveling items (boards, blocks, etc…) to level your RV.

RV using leveling blocks in Colter Bay RV Park

Challenge: RV Sites are Close Together

While individual RV sites have plenty of room for pullouts, slide-outs, and awnings, the sites are close together with no privacy. BUT, the sites are staggered, so you don’t feel right on top of your neighbors.

You may hear the noise from fellow campers and their RVs. Quiet hours are from 10:00 pm to 7:00 am.

If you have a spot behind the General Store or Laundry facility, know there is a good chance you will hear their generators, and they run off and on all day and night.

Grand Teton National Park - an RV in a RV Camp spot at Colter Bay RV Park

Pro Tip: Do not reserve RV sites 401 – 430 if you think the Store and Laundry buildings’ generators will be a problem.

Earplugs can be helpful too.

Challenge: Weak Satellite Signals

There is no Wifi in the RV Park, but you can find free Wifi at the Laundry and Showers building, Restaurants, and the Colter Bay Cabin Office.

Satellite and TV signals are spotty here at best, and are often reported to be nonexistent. For the evening, bring movies for your DVD or attend a ranger-led talk, or go to the picnic area on the Swimming Beach and watch the sunset.

Challenge: No Campfires in Individual RV Sites

Speaking of campfires, none are allowed in the Colter Bay RV Park as none of the individual sites have a fire pit.

Colter Bay used to have fire pits and grills at the north end of Swimming Beach, but they have been removed for fire and bear safety.

You can still go to Swimming Beach and take your camp stove there to roast marshmallows.

Dornans Spur Ranch Cabins – A Grand Teton National Park Lodging Option

Grand Teton National Park Dornan's Cabins

A cabin at Dornans — photo credit: Texas Tongs on Flickr

Dornans village is a little confusing when it comes to being considered “inside” or “outside” Grand Teton National Park.

It is technically INSIDE the boundaries of Grand Teton National Park, but it is right outside the southern gate entrance in Moose, WY, where you pay and/or show your park pass.

I mean Dornans is right outside the gate.

Like, about a mile.

Less than five minutes by car.

Therefore, we consider Dornans Spur Ranch Cabins a lodging option INSIDE Grand Teton National Park.

And if you need further proof it’s inside the park, the individual cabins do not have TV sets. (It is a park rule that no TV sets are allowed in any lodging inside Grand Teton National Park).

Dornans is inside Grand Teton National Park’s boundaries but outside the south entrance to the park. See Map.

Staying at the Dornans Spur Ranch Cabins – Advantages and Challenges

There are advantages and challenges for ALL lodging choices in Grand Teton National Park.

Here are Dornans Spur Ranch Cabins’.

Please know: When I point out the advantages and/or challenges, I’m not doing so to persuade you to stay or dissuade you from staying at Dornans, but to tell you upfront what the cabins are and are not so you can:

  • Go in with accurate expectations
  • Be happy with your choice of lodging
  • Avoid surprises

Location

Every lodging option inside Grand Teton National Park has the advantage of location, as they are already inside the park and have, or are close to, Teton views.

Dornans location advantage is that it is close to:

Dornans is close to some of the iconic locations you see in photographs, which makes drive times less, and can mean a few more minutes sleep (yea!) if you are going for sunrise pictures.

Drive Times from Dornans Spur Ranch Cabins

Drive times approximate without traffic:

  • to Park Entrance at Moose, WY = 1.2 miles, 4 minutes
  • to Jackson Hole Airport = 4.8 miles, 8 minutes
  • to Jenny Lake Visitor Center = 8.4 miles, 16-22 minutes
  • to Jackson = 12.9 miles, 18-22 minutes
  • to Signal Mountain Lodge = 18.2 miles, 30-40 minutes
  • to Park Entrance at Moran: via HWY 191/89 = 18.6 miles, 22-28 minutes — via Teton Park Road = 24.8 miles, 40-50 minutes
  • to Jackson Lake Lodge: via HWY 191/89 = 24.2 miles, 35-45 minutes — via Teton Park Road = 22.9 miles, 40-50 minutes
  • to Colter Bay Marina = via HWY 191/89 = 28.9 miles, 40-50 minutes — via Teton Park Road = 27.6 miles, 45-55 minutes
  • to Yellowstone South Boundary: via HWY 191/89 = 45.6 miles, 60-70 minutes, via Teton Park Road = 44.2 miles, 65-75 minutes

Advantage: Teton Views

Different cabins have different amounts of views of the Tetons, and most are obstructed by some amount of trees.

BUT, if you go a few feet up the hill towards the village, there are Teton views galore!

Grand Teton National Park Dornans Teton View

Advantage: Private and Quiet

Many lodging options inside Grand Teton National Park are cabins that are in duplexes, triplexes, and some are even in quadplexes.

Which can mean a lot of neighbors and noise.

At Dornans Spur Ranch Cabins, there are a total of 12 cabins found in six duplexes, which means only one neighbor.

The other cabins are spread out and not up against each other.

Grand Teton National Park Dornan's Cabin Area

Cabins are spread out — Photo Credit: Roy Peterson

Many people have commented in their reviews how quiet the cabin area is and how that made it feel private. The way the village is set up, the cabins are down a small hill that serves as a buffer from the rest of the village.

My Personal Experience

I stayed at Dornans for one night in the summer of 2020.

I stayed in a one bedroom cabin and found the cabin to be very quiet and it did indeed feel very private.

In fact, I didn’t know I was in a duplex and that there was a cabin on the other side of the wall until the next morning when I looked at the map in the folder. If I had known, I would have made an effort to be quieter as not to disturb the neighbors. (Here’s hoping they found the cabin quiet too!)

To double check that my experience was other guests’ experience, I did scour reviews left from previous guests. Found over and over in the reviews was the comment “quiet and private”, with only one or two mentions of hearing loud neighbors.

Advantage: All Cabins Come With a Kitchen

Kitchens are scarce in lodging inside Grand Teton National Park, and when you do find a place with a kitchen, you usually have to pay more for it.

At Dornans, there are only two types of cabins, a one bedroom cabin, and a two bedroom cabin. Both options come with a kitchen.

Grand Teton Dornans Cabins with a Full Kitchen

Note: Pots, pans, glasses, mugs and silverware are provided. Items like foil, spices, condiments, etc… are not provided. Plan accordingly.

Advantage: Free Wifi in ALL Cabins

All the Dornan Spur Ranch Cabins have free wifi.

You don’t have to share this advantage with your kids, but I’m pretty sure they will figure it out….

Advantage: On the Snake River

All the cabins are close to the Snake River and if you look around, you’ll find some Adirondack chairs to sit in and watch the river go by.

If you’re lucky, you might see some rafters and anglers (people who fish) float by. You may even see some bald eagles and osprey! They are always on the hunt for a fish.

And if you are very lucky, you may see a Moose near by. (Do follow all animal safety rules, stay a minimum of 25 yards from moose, and don’t feed them!)

Pro Tip: You might increase your chances of seeing a moose over by the bridge. There are some offshoots of the river over there that they like.

Note: Use extreme caution around the Snake River. The river banks can be steep and slippery, and the river is swift and dangerous.

Advantage: The Restaurants and Shops in Dornans Village

The cabin area is a little removed from the village, which gives it it’s quiet and private setting. To access all the shops and restaurants of Dornans Village, just walk a few feet up the short hill.

Pizza Pasta Co Restaurant

The Pizza Pasta Co Restaurant is a restaurant with two outside decks, a bar, and an inside eating area that has large picture windows for Teton views.

They are open year round (except for the months of November and April) and a good place for lunch, dinner, drinks, and snacks. They have a diverse menu that includes items for kids, vegetarians, and gluten avoiders.

Grand Teton National Park Dornan's Pizza Pasta Co Restaurant Deck

View from Pizza Pasta Co Restaurant Deck

One thing to know about the Pizza Pasta Co Restaurant is that upon walking in the door, it looks like a full-service restaurant.

It isn’t.

Which is okay, and can be used to your advantage. Click here for the process, and the tips and tricks.

Chuckwagon Restaurant

The Chuckwagon is an outdoor, casual place to eat, is great for families, and can accommodate larger groups.

Views are fantastic, the food is average, prices are comparable for the area, and the service is self-serve.

Grand Teton National Park Dornans Outdoor Eating Chuckwagon

Outdoor dining at Dornans Chuckwagon Restaurant

The menu will have at least one option for everyone, including kids and vegetarians.

Order and pay at the cash register, grab your silverware and beverage and stake out your spot.  Your food will be brought to you.

A big draw of the Chuckwagon for kids (of all ages) is the opportunity to eat in a teepee! If the teepee is full, then there are many tables outside, covered and uncovered with a spectacular view of the Tetons and the Snake River.

Dornan's Teepee

Trading Post and Deli

The Trading Post is the grocery store where you can pick up the normal grocery store things, but for a higher price than you are used to paying (which is something to get used to in Grand Teton National Park and surrounding area).

They also have some gourmet and specialty items available, even a few items you can take home as souvenirs (think huckleberry jam).

One of the best things about the Trading Post is the deli. Here you can choose from about a dozen sandwiches. It is a good option for a picnic or as an alternative to the Chuckwagon or Pizza Pasta Co restaurants.

Grand Teton National Park Dornans Deli

Wine Shop

A wine shop with wines from France doesn’t seem like something you’d find in a village that looks like the old wild west, but you do, right between the trading post and the Pizza Pasta Co Restaurant. They have a selection of over 1,500 wines, plus chilled micro brews and a liquor section.

Grand Teton National Park Dornans Wine Shop

Adventure Sports

Adventure Sports is a place to rent your recreation equipment, specifically bikes, canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards and all the extras needed to go with them.

Grand Teton National Park Dornans Adventure Rentals

Adventure Sport Rentals at Dornans

My Experience with Adventure Sport Rentals at Dornans

I love, love, love the people who work at Adventure Sports. I try and rent all my equipment from there (I am not an affiliate).

These guys are great to work with and they will load your rentals onto your car (make sure you watch how they do it, for when you return the rentals).

I also like to rent from them as they are closer to Grand Teton National Park, and I like not having to drive into Jackson and back.

If you are renting bikes, you can access the bike path right from Dornan Village. You can head north into the park and ride all the way to Jenny Lake. Or you can cruise over to HWY 191/89/26 and pick up the bike path into Jackson. No transporting of equipment is necessary.

If you are renting paddleboards, String Lake is an excellent place to try them out (and pretty close by). String Lake is also a good place to take canoes and kayaks, with the bonus of being able to portage to Leigh Lake (1/10 of a mile from String Lake). Two lakes for the price of one!

Note: You can also take paddleboards up to Leigh Lake, just know that Leigh is a lot bigger and deeper than String Lake.

Shopping

Dornans has a nice gift shop next to the grocery store. It has all your usual touristy things to buy. They have some t-shirts that the other gift shops in the park don’t seem to carry. So make a stop here for a little variety.

Grand Teton National Park Dornans t-shirts

T-shirts found in the gift shop – – photo credit: Dornans

Pro Tip: The t-shirts seem to run a little small, consider going a size up for comfort. (If you find this is not your experience, do write to me and let me know the problem is me….)

If you are interested in signing up for a scenic rafting trip on the Snake River, you can find the signup desk inside the gift shop for the Barker-Ewing Scenic Float Trips. We use them and highly recommend them (not an affiliate) for a scenic river float. Reservations Required. See our full review.

Note: Barker-Ewing Scenic Float Trips only do scenic floats, no whitewater rafting.

Pro Tip: Visit their reservations page and save $5 per ticket when you book online. You can also call them at: 800-365-1800 or 307-733-1800 and they will honor the discount if you mention it.

Pro Tip: If you are staying at the Dornans Spur Ranch Cabins, ask if there is an additional discount for lodging there.

Fishing Shop

For all your fishing/angling needs – hit the on-site Snake River Angler shop.

Snake River Angler is a full-service fly fishing shop and guide service. Here you can buy fishing equipment, rent equipment, and/or sign up for a guided fishing trip.

Challenges of Staying at Dornans Spur Ranch Cabins

While the advantages of staying at Dornans are many, there are some challenges. Solutions and suggestions provided when applicable. Also, I will describe my personal experience when helpful.

Challenge: No On-Site Laundry Facilities

The individual cabins do not have washers or dryers and there isn’t an on-site laundromat like Colter Bay and Signal Mountain have.

Laundromat - none at Dornans

No on-site laundry facilities — Image by Ryan McGuire from Pixabay

Solutions

So, if you need to do laundry, you have a few options that you will have to drive to: (2023 prices)

  • Jackson Laundromat850 W Broadway – 13.8 miles, 21 minutes – Washer: $4.50 – $9.00 per load / Dryer: $1.25 – $1.75 per load
  • Missing Sock Laundromat S 1325 HWY 191/89 – 15.3 miles, 24-28 minutes – Washer: Starts at $2.75 per load / Dryer: 25 cents per 6 minutes
  • Signal Mountain Lodge17.9 miles, 30 minutes – Washer: $3 – $5 per load / Dryer: $1 per 20 minutes
  • Colter Bay Launderette27.6 miles, 40 minutes – Washer: $3.50 per load / Dryer: $2.50 per load

Challenge: On the Flightpath

While being close to the airport is an advantage of Dornans, the disadvantage is that Dornans is on the flightpath of the jets and planes that come into and out of the airport.

You will see and hear planes fly over a few times a day.

Plane overhead with birds

Dornans is close to the airport — Image by Gerhard G. from Pixabay

Solutions

There isn’t really a solution to this, except maybe ear plugs during the day if you think this will be an issue for you. The good news is there are few, if any, night flights, so it is mainly an issue in the daytime.

My Experience

I don’t remember hearing or seeing the planes while I was inside the cabin, or even outside on the back porch. That is not to say they weren’t there, I just didn’t notice them.

I seem to notice them more when I am on the top deck at the Pizza Pasta Co Restaurant. I find myself annoyed with them as I’m having my post hike beverage up there looking at the view.

Challenge: No Air Conditioning

This is not uncommon for lodging inside Grand Teton National Park. Like most of the other lodges inside the park, Dornans does not have air conditioning.

The good news is, that there are only a few days in the summer when air conditioning is needed, and there are only a few hours on those days when it is needed.

glass of ice - Engin Akyurt from pixabay

Finding ways to cool off — Image by Engin Akyurt from Pixabay

Solutions

  • If you can, bring fans with you.
  • Find shade close by. Here at this altitude, there is quite a difference in temperature between the sun and the shade.
  • The Craig Thomas Visitor Center, which is very close by, has air conditioning. Plan a trip during the afternoon and look around and shop.
  • Jackson Lake Lodge has air conditioning in its main lodge. They have a nice, large common room with a large picture window of the Tetons. It’s a great place to spend an afternoon to cool off (also great for socked-in, rainy days). There are also two restaurants and three shops there.

My Experience

When I stayed there in late July (one of the hotter months) I didn’t need air conditioning. I drew the curtains in the afternoon and had a couple of windows open and found it to be very pleasant.

Challenge: It is Difficult to Make Reservations on Smartphones

Sorry Dornans, I have mad love for you, your village, your cabins, and especially your Adventure Shop and Pizza Pasta Restaurant Bar, but the website reservations page needs some improvement.

It is very difficult to book a cabin using a smartphone.

Or at least for me on my iPhone.

It’s awkward and clunky and the info is cut off in the portrait position. I have to turn it to the landscape position to see the rooms and rates and then it takes a minute to figure out how to progress once a cabin is chosen. I find it much, MUCH easier to make reservations on my desktop computer.

Woman frustrated with phone

Difficult to make cabin reservations on mobile, but easier to make them on a laptop or desktop

Additional “constructive” criticism includes: it would be nice to have a map of the cabins on the website and reservations page.

Challenge: No Housekeeping During Stay

No housekeeping available during multiple night stays.

This seems to be the norm now throughout many of the lodges inside the park, and may be here to stay.

Cleaning Countertop

No housekeeping during stay

Solutions

For fresh towels and linens you can stop by the front desk from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and pick them up.

Be proactive by bringing any needed cleaning supplies you think you’ll need. (Since COVID, who doesn’t travel with disinfectant/cleaning supplies?) There are some dish-cleaning supplies underneath the kitchen sink.

Challenge: Strict Cancellation Policy

Dornans has a very strict deposit and cancellation policy.

The following wording is from their reservation page when you go to pay:

Cancellation Policy:

If you need to cancel your reservation sixty (60) or more days prior to your arrival, we charge a $100 processing fee.  If you cancel your reservation within sixty days of your arrival, we retain your entire deposit.

For information call 307-733-2522.

Calendar dates

Have firm dates to avoid cancellations  — Image by Károly Váltó from Pixabay

Solutions

No solutions or workarounds on this one.

The only advice to give is to make sure you have firm travel dates if you decide to book at Dornans.

If your dates are not set in stone, or you want the flexibility to make adjustments closer to your travel days, consider staying elsewhere. Signal Mountain Cabins require a 7-day notice for cancellations with a $25 fee, Colter Bay Cabins require a 3-day notice, with a $15 fee.

Tips When Making a Reservation

To make a reservation, call: 307-733-2522, or book online.

  • Book early to get the best possible options and the most to select from, they sell out by opening of summer season. You can make a reservation 12 months in advance.
  • Book direct from Dornans for the best rates and availability (3rd party vendors often charge more and have more restrictive cancellation policies).
  • Know that all rates posted on the website do not include tax. (Tax is usually around 11% = 6% state tax, 5% lodging tax.)
  • If you have mobility issues, it is best to call to make your reservation to discuss options 307-733-2522. If you want to book online, request the Rimrock Cabin, as it is the only ADA compliant cabin (according to Dornans staff 1/3/2022).
  • All buildings are non-smoking.
  • No Pets Allowed.

Tips to Enhance Your Stay

Here are some additional tips while staying at Dornans Spur Ranch Cabins:

  • Have a good map and directions to get to the village of Dornans. Cell service is spotty throughout the park and you may not always be able to pull up directions on your phone.
  • Bring your own coffee. Coffee maker and filters are provided, along with grounds for one pot of coffee.
  • Bring your own spices and condiments, not provided in the kitchen.
  • Bring your own shampoo and conditioner. Soap and hairdryer provided.
  • If possible, bring your own small fan, to aid in cooling off the room if needed.
  • Know there are different heating controls for the different rooms. There is one in the bedroom, in the bathroom, and one in the living room.
  • Just in case, bring any cleaning supplies you think you may need.
  • Bring extra camp chairs for sitting out on the deck if there are more than two people in your party.
  • The BBQ grill uses charcoal. You will need to bring/buy your own charcoal. Before you buy, check the recycling room to see if any extra charcoal has been left behind.
  • Bring a flashlight to navigate the pathways to the cabin at night. There are some lights, but a flashlight helps increasingly!
  • If the restaurants are too crowded and loud, order your food to go and eat on your back porch. (Or look for Adirondack chairs by the river – bring bug spray!!!)
  • If you stay in the off-season, know that not all services may be open. Call and check: 307-733-2522.
  • Bring Bear Spray, have it reachable, and know how to use it.
  • Bring bug spray. You are closer to the water, which can mean more mosquitos.
  • Bring an afterbite stick.
  • Use extreme caution around the Snake River. It is swift and dangerous.

Now You Know

Hopefully the information provided here will help you in your lodging and accommodations search.

Staying at the Jackson Lake Lodge – Advantages and Challenges

There are advantages and challenges for all lodging choices in Grand Teton National Park, here are Jackson Lake Lodge’s.

Please know: When I point out the advantages and/or challenges, I’m not doing so to persuade you to stay or dissuade you from staying at one of the rooms at Jackson Lake Lodge, but to tell you up front what the cottages and rooms are and are not so you can:

  • go in with accurate expectations
  • be happy with your choice of lodging
  • avoid surprises

Full Disclosure: I have only stayed once at Jackson Lake Lodge in their Moose Pond Mountain View Cottage for one night. I will include my personal experience when helpful.

Advantage: Central Location in Park

Jackson Lake Lodge has the advantage of being centrally located in the park.

Important Note: While Jackson Lake Lodge has the word “Lake” in it’s title, it is not on Jackson Lake, nor within walking distance of the lake. You can see the lake in the distance.

Advantage: Views

Ok. This is probably their biggest advantage.

If you get a room with a mountain view, the views are spectacular!

You can see the entire Teton Range, and see a great view of Mt. Moran.

Honestly, what other mountain looks like this one? And with it shooting up directly from the lake? It is stunning.

If you don’t get a room with a mountain view, Jackson Lake Lodge has their main, upstairs lobby that has a floor to ceiling picture window that frames Mt. Moran perfectly. Plus you can see the entire Teton range from here too.

And speaking of their upstairs lobby:

Advantage: Large Main Lobby

This is a lobby you are going to want to hang out in.

The upstairs lobby has several couches, benches, and chairs set up to comfortably gaze out the window at the Tetons. As mentioned previously, the floor to ceiling picture window frames Mt. Moran perfectly.

And there is free wifi throughout the lodge!

Pro Tip: Jackson Lake Lodge’s upstairs lobby is a great place to ride out rainy, socked in days. Also a great place to cool off on hot, sunny days.

The lobby is a great place in the morning to watch the sunrise (if you don’t want to be outdoors or you have sleeping teenagers). Stake out a couch and watch the sunrise while drinking a cup of coffee.

Speaking of coffee…

Advantage: You Can Buy Coffee at 6:30 am

The Coffee Cart at Jackson Lake Lodge opens at 6:30 am.

This is the earliest you can purchase coffee in Grand Teton National Park!

Get your coffee and pastries to go, starting at 6:30 am

A good thing to know if you are someone that likes to get out and about early.

Advantage: The Blue Heron Lounge

Jackson Lake Lodge has four eating establishments on site, plus the Coffee Cart. The eateries range from the Poolside Catina to fine dining at the Mural Room.

The Blue Heron Lounge is the best of all worlds. They serve a small selection of upscale food and drinks, which is a little more variety than the pool, and not at the prices of the Mural Room. The food is good and the menu is diverse, including dairy-free, gluten-free, and vegetarian options.

At the Blue Heron you get fantastic Teton views whether you eat outside on the deck or inside the lounge. They have large picture windows that face the Tetons; something the onsite Pioneer Grill does not, and again, you are getting them at less expensive prices than the Mural Room.

Note, even though it is a lounge, kids under 21 are welcome with their adults, both outside on the deck and inside the lounge. There isn’t a kid’s menu posted, but ask your server for kid options.

Pro Tip: If you eat out on the deck, have your sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen with you. The deck gets full sun and there won’t be any umbrellas for shade. Bug spray will be helpful too as you are close to the willows below the deck.

Advantage: Free Wifi in Rooms

You don’t have to share this advantage with your kids, but I’m pretty sure they will figure it out….

All the rooms at Jackson Lake Lodge have free wifi.

Wifi in every room

Advantage: Increased Chance of Cell Service

Cell service is spotty at best in Grand Teton National Park. It can be difficult to find and harder to use consistently.

I have found Jackson Lake Lodge to have the best cell service available in the park. (Disclaimer: I use AT&T (not an affiliate) on an iPhone.)

In fact, I often suggest in my other posts and articles to come to Jackson Lake Lodge if wanting to use cell service.

Pro Tip: Willow Flats Overlook, the first pullout to the south of Jackson Lake Lodge, also has strong cell service.

Challenges of Jackson Lake Lodge

No lodging is perfect for everyone, especially inside National Parks.

What is acceptable to some, may not be to others, and that is ok!

Following are some challenges of staying at the Jackson Lake Lodge.

The challenges listed here are ones that were most often mentioned when I studied posted visitor reviews.

Please note that the challenges listed are not mentioned to dissuade you from staying at Jackson Lake Lodge.

In fact, solutions are provided for each challenge when available.

Also, I have added notes, when applicable, from my own experience of staying at Jackson Lake Lodge.

Challenges are listed to help you determine if Jackson Lake Lodge is the right lodging for you and to go in with accurate expectations.

Challenge: Rooms Are Not On or Close to the Lake

Not sure this is a “challenge”, but it should be made clear that Jackson Lake Lodge, despite having “lake” in its name, is not on or close to the lake. It is not within walking distance either like Colter Bay and Signal Mountain Lodge.

You can see the lake in the distance.

Solutions

If it is important to you to stay at a place where you can be within walking distance of Jackson Lake and a marina to access boating activities, consider staying at Signal Mountain Lodge or Colter Bay.

If you stay at Jackson Lake Lodge, you are a short driving distance from two marinas.

Signal Mountain Lodge has a marina that you can drive to in less than 15 minutes. There you can walk down to the marina to rent boats, kayaks, and canoes or go a little south of their boat ramp to swim (swim area is rocky, use water shoes).

Colter Bay is also a short car drive away (< 20 min) and is owned by the same parent company as Jackson Lake Lodge. Colter Bay has a marina where you can rent boats, kayaks, and canoes and sign up to go on scenic lake cruises. Go to Jackson Lake Lodge’s front desk to make reservations. There is also a large swimming beach there (beach is rocky, not sandy, bring water shoes).

Challenge: No Air Conditioning

This challenge isn’t exclusive to Jackson Lake Lodge, as most of the lodging inside the park does not have air conditioning.

It is worth noting here that in scrubbing previous visitor reviews, lack of air conditioning was mentioned a fair amount during the hotter months of summer. It may have been mentioned frequently because many of the rooms don’t have the tree cover to provide shade like other park lodging does, making the rooms more exposed to direct sun.

Fans help cool things off

Solutions

Most rooms come with a fan found in the closet. If you don’t find one there, go to the front desk and request one.

While this next solution doesn’t help if the room is warm at night while trying to sleep (temps do cool down quite a bit at night), you can go to the main lobby and relax where it is cooler and take in the breathtaking view through the floor to ceiling picture window. In fact, I often encourage people who aren’t staying at Jackson Lake Lodge to visit the upstairs lobby as a place to cool off and enjoy the view.

My Experience

I stayed in one of the Moose Pond Mountain Cottage rooms in mid July, it faced the Tetons and it didn’t have any tree cover for shade. The room was warm, but not unbearably so. I didn’t know to look in the closet for a fan or I would have. I opened all the windows, there are large ones on the west side of the room, and small ones on the east side of the room. It didn’t give much of a cross breeze, but I slept with them open all night and was not uncomfortable. My only complaint was when I opened the windows I could hear my loud next door neighbors clear as day.

Challenge: The Cottage Rooms Are Not Stand Alone Cottages

None of the rooms offered at Jackson Lake Lodge are stand alone structures.

The “Classic Cottage”, “King Patio Cottage”, “Mountain View Cottage”, “Moose Pond Mountain View Cottage”, and the “Moose Pond Mountain View Cottage Suite” are all housed in multiple unit buildings. You will share walls with other units like a motel. All cottage rooms do have their own private outdoor entrance.

For cottages that have a balcony, there are out door wooden dividers between yours and your neighbor’s.

Solutions

This challenge is another one that is more of a clarification than a challenge. It is called out and clarified so you know what to expect and that there aren’t any surprises when you find out they are not stand alone cottages.

If you prefer a stand alone cabin/cottage you could try requesting one at Colter Bay Cabins. Do know that Colter Bay Cabins are very rustic and basic cabins with no extras or frills; and know that even if you get a stand alone cabin, it may be mere inches away from another stand alone cabin.

Jenny Lake Lodge does have individual, stand alone cabins. Do note they are a bump up in price.

Challenge: Housekeeping

Like most other lodging around Grand Teton National Park in these Covid times, there is no housekeeping services for multiple night stays.

Cleaning Countertop

No housekeeping during multi-night stay

Solutions

You can call housekeeping and request needed items: towels, sheets, blankets etc…I would maybe be even more proactive and find out where housekeeping is and walk over and get needed items. That way you aren’t waiting on them to drop off your requested items.

Be even more proactive by bringing any needed cleaning supplies you think you’ll need. (Since Covid, who doesn’t travel with disinfectant/cleaning supplies?)

Challenge: “Seems Expensive for What You Get.”

This is a challenge mentioned frequently for most lodging inside Grand Teton National Park.

To accurately set expectations, most of Jackson Lake Lodge’s rooms equate to three star rooms for luxury prices.

I know, that is tough to hear.

When you pay luxury prices you expect luxury rooms.

Unfortunately, this is not so in Grand Teton National Park.

If you are an experienced National Park traveler, this may not be a surprise to you.

If you are new to National Parks, this may not only be a surprise, but an unwelcome one at best.

Jackson Lake Lodge is a historic lodge built in 1955 and is on the list of National Historic Landmarks. It’s a large, grand lodge, with a picture window giving the lodge a majestic air. So when visitors enter their rooms, it can sometimes be a shock to see their room is similar to a motel room. A motel room with aging furniture and furnishings. With no rooms having AC or a microwave, and only a few with fridges, the room can feel minimal and stark. Not luxurious.

Solutions

First solution that comes to mind is setting expectations, which I hope this article is doing. By knowing what to expect, what a place entails – what it has and what it doesn’t, you can make a decision on what is right for you, what you can put up with and what you can’t.

Also, you can enjoy the advantages of the Jackson Lake Lodge listed on this page without lodging here. You can stay elsewhere and still come and eat at the restaurants, shop the stores, do the hikes, do the horse rides, sign up for boating at Colter Bay and on the Snake River, use the wifi, get a cell signal, look for animals, relax in the upstairs lobby, and of course, enjoy the view, both inside and outside.

Tips When Making a Reservation

To make a reservation, call: 307-543-3100 or book online. Add special requests by telling the reservation agent on the phone, or add them to the “notes” box on the online form.

  • Definitely book directly through the Grand Teton Lodge Company either by calling 307-543-3100 or online. (3rd party vendors often charge more and have more restrictive cancellation policies).
  • Reservations are available on a 12-month rolling basis.
  • If staying at a Mountain View Cottage, Moose Pond View Room or Suite, request a top floor (bottom floors can hear movements of top floors). They can’t guarantee a top floor, but it helps to ask for one.
  • If bringing your dog, request the Classic Cottage. Only Classic Cottages allow pets, $20 per night.
  • Rollaway Beds are $12 a night.
  • No rooms have microwaves, some have fridges, keep that in mind about leftovers.
  • If possible, book your activities when booking your room. This includes horse rides, scenic river raft rides, and eating at the Mural Room. It is difficult to sign up for these when arriving as they fill quickly. If activities aren’t available to book when you make your reservation, do ask the reservation agent what the first day for sign up is and mark it on your calendar to call back!

Tips to Enhance Your Stay

Here are some additional tips while staying at Jackson Lake Lodge:

  • Have a good map and directions to get to Jackson Lake Lodge. Cell service is spotty throughout the park and you may not always be able to pull up directions on your phone.
  • Upon entering your room, make sure your windows open if you think you’ll need to open them at any time to cool off – better to know right away and call maintenance then find out in evening.
  • Know you can get an uber to Jackson Lake Lodge from the airport, but it is very difficult to get one from the lodge back to the airport.
  • Bring binoculars – you are right over a prime animal area – the willows, look for animals off the back deck of the lodge.
  • Make all activity reservations early and before you arrive if possible, as they fill up quickly and may be full if you try to sign up when you arrive at the lodge.
  • Just in case, bring any cleaning supplies you think you may need.
  • If you want to eat at the Mural room, make reservations through OpenTable. If possible, make reservations before arriving at the lodge.
